sdp07 Cynthia Connolly Deckle Edge
In the early 90's when Cynthia's uncle passed away, she acquired all of his cameras. Being that her uncle was in the CIA, he had a lot, including an Olympus "half frame" camera. This shot "half a frame".. and thus one gets 72 exposures in a 36 exposure roll. Up until this moment, Cynthia was only shooting "full frame" black and white film in her "regular" 35mm camera. She decided to load only color film in the half frame and to experiment. She would send the film in the mail to a cheap film processing plant, and they would print two half frame images on one photographic print. Cynthia loved old deckle edged postcards, and loved touristic cards with facts and figures on the back. Combining these elements, and a ton of research on printers, she found a printer who pulled out of their warehouse the old die-cut for deckle edged cards. She started with a small batch of a thousand each of six images. When they were delivered, Cynthia panicked realizing that they she was going to have to sell them. With experience in mail order at Dischord, she devised some packaging so they could be sold as a “set”. Cynthia started selling the cards into as many stores as she could find fit (including the New Museum store, the Whitney Store next door, and many many bookstores and Museums). The Third set contained 20 cards, with 10 different images, published in 2001.
