Fugazi hits Carbondale, a small town in Southern Illinois, for the first and only time. Out of the five shows they played in the state of Illinois on the 1993 tour, this one in Carbondale must've felt pretty special because I think the city is an uncommon tour stop, and Fugazi always tried to get to these kind of quieter places too. Ian opens the show with Facet Squared and off we go into the thick of it.

What we get is a surprisingly clear and detailed recording for the era. There's just the right amount of the room's air caught on tape and it makes everything breathe nicely. When listened closely there's some low end boom but luckily it's not at all overpowering. For a fan of Brendan's drumming this is a great FLS entry from the era as his kit is wide in the stereo field and sounds a tad more detailed and powerful. The added reverbs, delays, etc. from the soundboard are utilized a bit more boldly here than average to my ears. They sound fantastic and add cool elements to the music.

The band push on to play a rocking flow which includes a vivid Sieve-Fisted Find. The song was played only a handful of times on the fall 1993 US tour and it's a nice addition to the set.

Exit Only makes an appearance and it's a complete delight to hear, especially because of the great drum sound which allows Brendan's cool tricks to really shine. Promises follows surprisingly early in the set and gets a massive, explosively dynamic performance.

The rendition of Suggestion just might be the most emotional and moving I've heard so far. The song is quite often a show highlight and that is definitely the case here. The band is a unified force that moves from fiery grooves to quiet jamming with ease, taking the listener on a journey. And when Ian and Guy go into a total hypnosis mode during the song, it's pure Fugazi gold.

The show practically flies by as there's not much unnecessary confrontation or other trouble from the enthusiastic crowd. There are a couple of pleas for the stage diving to stop but that's it. The band push on straight to the powerful and anthemic final duo of Turnover and Repeater. No encores follow, which was probably due to house curfew or some other outta-our-hands limitation.

This is a quirky little recording, strong and steady throughout. I recommend this especially for the above average overall sound, plus the band performs a great selection of songs as tightly as ever.

My first FUGAZI show and a memorable one. Drove from Evansville Indiana to see it.
